Gavin's class celebrated the end of the school year by having a "Luau" water party. Several of us questioned who's brilliant idea it was to have a water fight among kids who can only hear through expensive, delicate electronic equipment, but somehow it still worked and the kids had a great time.
Gavin couldn't get the water balloon to break--he threw the same water balloon probably six times before Mommy finally helped him get enough velocity to have it finally pop. He didn't have any problems figuring out the water gun though, or how to get his buddy Braxton or Braxton's sister!
Gavin didn't realize that saying goodbye to his teacher, Ms. Natalie, was for good or he probably would have cried. Ms. Natalie will probably never know how significant her impact was on Gavin. She left to move to Colorado the day after school ended and Gavin, after having a break from the intensity of school, had his language completely take off during the first couple weeks out of school. Gavin can now hold conversations with just about anyone--though they can't always understand what he's saying; his skills with language now astound us!
Emma loved her first year of school and it was with a mixture of excitement and sadness that she said goodbye to her teacher, Mrs. Anderson. Mrs. Anderson had an incredible ability as a teacher of 24 Kindergarteners to still challenge each individual student. Emma was among the top of her class for both reading and math and yet, she still learned new things everyday. Though it seems that Emma was too much for her as she retired and subsequently moved to St. George!
Emma also had fun with the assistant teacher, Ms. Mindi, who is in our ward. One Sunday, during the beginning of the school year, Emma went up to Mindi at church and tritely said, "I have to see you on Sunday, too?!" Then she smiled big and puffed up her chest as she realized how special she was to see her teacher in both places!
Emma made many new friends and was sad to not have those people to play with everyday. But she was also looking forward to summer and all the fun things that were going to come.
I was glad that Emma and Gavin had learned so much and that they would get to be home again. I was also thrilled to not have to drive up to campus three times a day anymore! (Emma and Gavin's schools are on Utah State University campus and Gavin had morning preschool and Emma had afternoon Kindergarten.)
